Hawaii County, known as the “Big Island,” is the largest of four counties, which form the state of Hawaii. The western portion of Hawaii County consists of the Kona and Kohala Districts, and is home to approximately 60,000 residents. With 40 miles of gorgeous coastline, South Kona offers an enviable lifestyle. Residents enjoy yearlong sunshine, white-sand beaches, lava fields, lush greenery and scenic ancient temples. Kona International Airport has several airlines providing daily, inter-island flights and service to the mainland. The primary sources of employment are finance, insurance and real estate, hotel and travel services, wholesale and retail trade, government, manufacturing and agriculture. Hawaii County produces the majority of the state’s fresh fruit, macadamia nuts, coffee and livestock. Manufacturing facilities produce heavy equipment, lava rock products and other Hawaiian-themed items such as sportswear and candies. With the island’s history, cultural heritage and booming travel industry, there are many attractions and activities. The county maintains extensive public recreation facilities, including neighborhood parks and playgrounds, beach parks, ball fields and a public golf course. The county also offers activities for all ages, including water safety, cultural appreciation and a comprehensive seniors program. Public education is provided by the Hawaii Department of Education, which operates more than 30 schools in Hawaii County. There are also approximately 15 private schools within the county, and the University of Hawaii is located on the eastern side of the island.
